SunQuest Adds 3D Terrain Shadows: See Sun and Shade at a Glance

December 22, 2025

SunQuest is introducing a major update: 3D Terrain Shadows. In the mountains, a “sunny” forecast doesn’t guarantee sun where you are — a ridge, a cliff, or a deep valley can hide it much earlier than expected. SunQuest now displays terrain-cast shadows so you can see where sunlight actually reaches, at any time of day and in any season.

With over 100,000 users and an average 4.8/5 rating on the App Store, SunQuest is designed for anyone who wants a simple answer before heading out: will this spot be in the sun or in the shade — and until what time?

Don’t get surprised by terrain shadows

SunQuest combines Augmented Reality (AR) with interactive 3D maps using global topography data to simulate real-world sunlight. In a fraction of a second, the app highlights sunlit and shaded areas, based on the time of day and the season.

For Skiing & Winter Sports

Ski on the sunny side

Find the “sunny side” for warmer runs and better visibility — or stay in the shade to keep snow fresher and preserve good conditions longer.

Après-ski, in the sun

Find a terrace that keeps the sun through lunch, or for a well-earned drink later on.

For Outdoor & Hiking

Plan your route around light

See when you’ll be in the sun or in the shade, and choose the best time to go — then pick sunny spots for breaks, or seek shade when temperatures rise.

Scout your campsite

Choose the spot and orientation for morning sun, and avoid early evening shade.

For Photography & Cinematography

Scout the location

Spot the light window: when the location is sunlit, when it falls into shade, and how long it lasts.

Control the light

Use sun direction to choose your angle, framing, and the right moment.

For Homeowners & Real Estate

Visualize sunlight before you sign

See how light and shadows shift across a terrace, garden, or living spaces throughout the year.

“SunQuest started with a simple idea: know where the sun is, and what it changes,” says Nicolas Marty. “Now you can preview real sunlight on site — before a ski day, a photo shoot, or a home visit.”
